Geoff Tate and his Operation: Mindcrime Final Tour are heading to Clearwater at Ruth Eckerd Hall on April 4th. This will be the last time he performs the album in its entirety. This third studio album was released while Geoff was with his former band on May 3rd, 1988. Geoff has since produced two more albums in the series, one of which will be released song by song in the coming year.
Musically, the blend of heavy metal and progressive rock evolves into a stunningly produced concept album that was significantly ahead of its time. The timeless vocals of Tate span a wide range of tones, from smooth, melodic delivery to powerful, operatic high notes. Tate’s voice is well-known for its clarity and precision, which enables him to convey deep emotion and complex narratives.
The story of the album explores the corruption of Nikki by Dr. X within an underground movement that targets government corruption. The story also involves a once-runaway street girl turned Nun, Mary, who knows too much and still tries to help young Nikki. Throughout the album, we see Nikki navigate problems with mind control, betrayal, and ultimately, redemption. The entire story remains a powerful tale that remains timeless to this very day, as we continue to see fraud and crime everywhere in our current world.
